Top 5 Foods for Heart Health

We all know that February is American Heart Month—I mean, it’s bisected by Valentine’s Day for Pete’s sake! Though there may be a plethora of heart-shaped candies and adorned cards still floating around out there, I’ve decided to join the efforts of the American Recall Center to bring you some heart-healthy nutrition advice before our collective attention shifts toward other things.

First, some scare tactics. Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death and a major cause of disability here in the USA? According to the CDC, more than 600,000 Americans die of heart disease annually. Fortunately, most contributing factors to heart disease are not genetic which means we get a say in whether or not we or someone we love falls victim to this awful disease.

Diet plays a huge role in heart health. Make this month the jumping off point for better eating habits to benefit your ticker. You can start by weaving more of my Top 5 Foods for Heart Health into your diet.

Top 5 Foods for Heart Health

No. 1 – Cinnamon

Cinnamon is more than a sweet staple in my culinary arsenal, it’s a super-spice with superpowers! Just one daily teaspoon of antioxidant-rich cinnamon helps reduce artery-clogging fats in the bloodstream, helping prevent plaque build-up. According to recent research, it may also work to lower bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by as much as 26%. I like to sprinkle this on unsweetened yogurt, homemade toast with almond butter, a sliced apple, and into my morning oatmeal or smoothies.

No. 2 – Nuts

Nuts—like unsalted almonds, cashews, and pistachios—are very high in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, vitamin E, and fiber. Monounsaturated fats may help reduce levels of LDL cholesterol in your blood and lower your risk of heart disease and stroke. Walnuts are an excellent plant-based source of alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid which helps fight cardiovascular disease. Nuts are an easy-to-pack, non-messy snack. I always have small plastic baggy of almonds in my bag to ward off hunger pangs between meals!

No. 3 – Avocados

Another source of monounsaturated fats are avocados. Who doesn’t love this delicious fruit? Yes, it’s a fruit. Like nuts, avocados can lower levels of LDL cholesterol, and what’s more, may increase levels of HDL (“good”) cholesterol. Add some nutrient density to your smoothies with ¼ avocado per serving, or make some homemade guacamole and layer a thin smear of that goodness on a piece of whole grain toast. Top with a pinch of red pepper flakes for some kick!

No. 4 – Whole Grains

Speaking of whole grains, the soluble fiber found in whole grains like faro, brown rice, quinoa, and oatmeal actually binds to the cholesterol in your meal and drags it kicking and screaming out of your body. Take that LDL! An easy way to start your day off right, especially in these colder winter months, is a hearty breakfast of rolled oats with fresh fruit, chopped nuts, almond milk, and cinnamon—that’s three Top 5 Foods for Heart Health in one tasty bowl!

No. 5 – Tomatoes

No list for heart-healthy foods would be complete without tomatoes. Tomatoes are packed with disease-fighting antioxidants, vitamins A and C, and folic acid. They renowned for another anti-oxidative substance called lycopene. Lycopene is phytochemical and pigment that gives tomatoes their vibrant color. Lycopene has been linked to lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure, reduced risk of stroke, decreased inflammation in the body, and decreased LDL cholesterol. In an average diet, tomatoes account for over two-thirds of lycopene consumption but you can also get it from other fruits and vegetables like watermelon. Though out of season unless you live in warmer climates, try my Peach Gazpacho and Fruit Salad with Ginger Lime Dressing for more lycopene in your life.

there is great love, warmth, feeling, and forgiveness.
May this change you.
May it transfigure that which is negative, distant, or cold in you.
May you be brought in to the real passion, kinship, and affinity of belonging.
May you treasure your friends.
May you be good to them and may you be there for them;
may they bring you all the blessing, challenges, truth,
and light that you need for your journey.
May you never be isolated.
May you always be in the gentle nest of belonging with your soul-love.

Stress Hygiene 101: Reclining Butterfly Pose

Now that summer’s over, stress has its way of creeping up on us. Let’s face it, whether you’re in the academic world as a teacher or student or work year-round, the summer is almost always a more laid-back time in D.C. Once fall hits, not only are our bodies shocked by dropping temperatures and shorter days, but our mental and emotional selves are taxed by travel, grading, mounting deadlines and juggling all the things we do outside of work.

Amidst all this we manage to brush our teeth and wash our hands—you know, basic hygienic practice—so why don’t we prioritize stress hygiene in the same kind of routine way?

Today, I challenge you to take 5 minutes to come into one restorative yoga pose as a way to unwind, reset and recharge the body and mind. You can do this anywhere—office, gym, home, wherever! Hopefully, you’ll feel so good after doing so that you’ll make it a habit—just 5 minutes of quiet, eyes-closed stillness each day can make a world of difference when all that mental and emotional clutter starts to creep in.

Amy Rizzotto MOARfit Reclining Butterfly

Stress Hygiene 101: Reclining Butterfly Pose

  1. Come to a reclining position with your back flat against the floor, a mat or perhaps a blanket.
  2. Draw the soles of feet to touch, knees fan open.
  3. Close the eyes and bring one hand to your heart, one hand to your belly.
  4. Scan the body for any tension, drawing your awareness from the toes to the fingertips to the crown of your head and everywhere in between. Let the body feel wholly and completely relaxed.
  5. Stay here and breathe for 5 minutes, focusing on breath and any sensations that arise in the physical, mental and emotional body.
  6. When you’re ready to get up, gently draw the knees together and hug into a tight little ball. Slowly rise up to a seat and enjoy the rest of your day or evening, with a little less stress in tow.

Note: if you have any discomfort in the knees, groin or lower back, place a pillow or rolled up blanket under each knee for additional support.

I love doing this pose at the beginning of my Yoga for Athletes classes on Wednesday mornings at 6am at Yoga Heights. It’s a great way to settle in and zone out before moving the body more rigorously. It can be a great way to transition from the go-go pace of our everyday lives into a more mindful practice like yoga.

On Love.

While working on some new recipes and new posts, I thought I’d share some thoughts on a subject near and dear to my heart – literally – love. Before I go on, let me say that love comes in many forms. For me, a big part of how I share and receive love is through food. Cooking is a soulful, heartfelt endeavor and one that’s a big component of my own self-care regimen as well as my most authentic love language. Now back to that crazy little thing called…

Love is at the core of who we are and how we relate to the world. It is our foundation, our resting state, our home base.

Often, however, we can’t feel it – for ourselves or for others. It can come and go, clouded by stress, pain or whenever we’re feeling threatened and vulnerable.

Sometimes all it takes is one critical comment from a friend, partner or colleague to be driven from this home base.

MOARfit Love Heart

Each time we run, we harden – or at least that’s often the case. We shield ourselves from future hurt. We fear what love can do.

Scary as it may be, we need to come home to love. All of us. We need to recognize and have confidence in our own hearts. This will ground us, uplift us and protect us.

If you’re finding it hard to come home to love, think of someone you care for wholeheartedly. It’s as easy as breathing to love them.

Then, allow yourself to love you with just as much ease and, more importantly, joy. Breath in, I feel loved. Breath out, I am loving.

DIY All-Natural Beauty: Age-Defying Coffee Sugar Scrub

Do you eat right? Exercise? Take moments to pause, breathe and reduce stress? If so, you’re doing just about everything right to lead a healthy lifestyle. A well-balanced diet full of fruits and veggies and low on junk food combined with movement and meditation are all key components to overall wellness.

One area that most of us neglect, however, are the products we put on our skin. Like our stomach, intestines and liver, our skin is an organ and it too can benefit from a little detox every now and again. The best part about detoxing your beauty regimen is you’ll save a lot of money—makeup and spa products are expensive!

Today, you’ll learn how easy it is to make an all-natural, age-defying spa treatment at home using ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen or pantry.

This DIY remedy’s active ingredient is coffee. Coffee is not only loaded with free radical-fighting antioxidants—those are the pests that lead to drooping skin and age-related disease—but the caffeine in it acts as an anti-inflammatory and may even lessen the appearance of cellulite. Three cheers for that!

It’s so simple to make your own age-dying coffee scrub at home, and here’s how to do it:

MOARfit DIY: Age-Defying Coffee Sugar Scrub

What You’ll Need:

  • A mason jar-or any other air-tight container
  • 1/2 cup coffee grounds
  • 1/4 cup granulated raw cane sugar
  • 2 Tbs raw honey
  • 1 Tbs ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil, softened—you can also use sweet almond oil

How to Make It:

Combine all ingredients in your mason jar, stir well and close the lid until you’re ready to use it.

To Use:

Scoop out a small amount and rub it onto your skin, massaging the area thoroughly to increase circulation. Let it sit for a few minutes then hop in the shower to rinse off. You can do this daily on the body, and once or twice a week on the face.

Have another favorite DIY beauty remedy? I’d love to learn about it. Start a conversation on Twitter @MOARfit or find me on Facebook.

Lights, Camera…TLC Sunday Brunch!

A few weeks ago, producers for a new TLC show (TLC Sunday Brunch) approached me to be their on air “Health Expert,” sharing several of my MOARfit recipes with viewers alongside the lovely and talented Ereka Vetrini. I could barely contain my excitement despite my best efforts to play it cool. I must say it was kind of a dream come true.

Way back in middle school me and one of my best friends, Jenna, used to do cooking shows for our families or whoever else would stomach our babbling and “creations.” My culinary skills weren’t exactly expert at the time, but both Jenna and I have grown up to work with food and feeding people in our own various ways. Never in a a million years did I imagine, however, that I’d be on TV telling people about my recipes and spreading the good word about how easy, affordable and fun healthy cooking can be.

My brief segments will air today, Sunday, July 27th and next Sunday, August 3rd between 12:00-1:00pm. Get your DVR ready to go! And I just might be filming a few more segments around yoga and mind/body wellness so stay tuned for more info on that!

Here are some photos from my very very cool day:

Lights, camera, ACTION. We got to work in my dream kitchen – a HUGE island with tons of counter space and a light, airy vibe.

Amy Rizzotto_TLC Sunday Brunch_Makeup

I got the full treatment with a hair stylist, Daryl, and makeup artist – her name is escaping me but she was so gorgeous and practices yoga and meditation so she’s my kind of chick! I can’t thank them enough for making me look purdy!

P.S. I had those curlers in for nearly 4 hours and was walking around like Betty Draper in my apron and full makeup.

TLC Sunday Brunch_Makeup

I had serious makeup arsenal envy after getting dolled up. A trip to Sephora might be in my near future.

The finished product! They did good, no? If only my hair could look that good every day…

TLC Sunday Brunch_Branded Apron

I even got to rock one of their cute TLC Sunday Brunch aprons. Thank goodness for stylist, Pascale’s handiwork in tweaking it to fit my petite frame!

TLC Sunday Brunch_MOARfit Strawberry Balsamic Tart

Speaking of stylists, my food even had a stylist. Actually, make that two! My Strawberry Balsamic Tart never looked so good.

TLC Sunday Brunch_Crew

A great big THANK YOU to the cast and crew who included me in this wonderful experience and made me feel so welcome and comfortable for my first TV appearance. I don’t know how they do it but they’re amazing!

Recent Events: Fueling Amazing with Athleta and Nutrition for Athletes with Off Road Cycling

The first official weekend of summer was jam-packed with fun. Not only was I at the studio (Yoga Heights) more than usual with my business partner getting some well-deserved R&R, but I had one MOARfit event each day to make it extra special.

First up – Fueling Amazing with Athleta Georgetown:

I had such an awesome group of yogis Saturday, June 21 for the Athleta Summer Solstice celebration down on The Labyrinth at Georgetown Waterfront Park.

Amy Rizzotto MOARfit Athleta 2

More than 25 people braved the temperamental weather and didn’t let a few rain drops during our sun salutations dampen the fun. Amy Rizzotto MOARfit Athleta

A great big THANK YOU to everyone that came out for the event and to Athleta for including me as their teacher for this powerful group!

To cap off the weekend – Nutrition for Athletes at Off Road:

Nutrition for Athletes MOARfit Amy Rizzotto

A fit-fabulous group of 15 runners (and some cyclists) came out to Off Road Indoor Cycling Sunday, June 22 for my Nutrition for Athletes Workshop. We covered pre-, during and post-race nutrition, all the while sampling delicious granola from my girl Alicia at Greenheart Wellness and smoothies concocted by yours truly.

Take Me to Church – Yoga Church

Taking class at Urban Flow in San Francisco yesterday was like going to church. A really really sweaty church. Communal voices. Offerings of goodwill. Intentions of universal interconnectedness. Close to 100 bodies filled the massive Mission Street studio for the talented Stephanie Snyder‘s creative, challenging and playful 90 minute flow class.

Urban Flow

As a teacher, I was trying to pay attention to her sequencing, listen to how she delivered her cues, and learn from her gifts, while simultaneously allowing myself to get lost in the breath and the movement. The first 75 minutes or so flew by and by the time I found myself resting gratefully in half pigeon as Hozier’s powerful Take Me to Church filled the room with spirit and soul, I was melting into my mat–in the absolute best of ways.

Urban Flow Student

I’m so lucky that taking an hour and a half for myself to go to a yoga class, immerse myself in the experience, and try and draw lessons from different teachers can be considered professional development. It had been way too long since I last did this and it reminded me of a few very important things.

I may be a teacher with things to share but more so I’m a student with SO much to learn.

True I know some things, valuable things, but in many ways I know nothing at all.

That’s the best part about this path. It never ends. There’s always growth. It will never be boring, and if I ever think it so, I’ve stopped seeking lessons and closed off to change. Every day is different and all I, or anyone, can ask of themselves is to show up, be open, and welcome whatever comes our way–the good, the not so good, and the divinely sweaty.
